Since the formation of amyloid-producing proteins is already implicated in HCCAA and other diseases, researchers have studied whether drugs that reduce the aggregation of these proteins have the potential to reduce the toxic oligomers, or polymers made up of a few different molecules. To properly study this strategy in HCCAA, the research team created cell lines expressing both wild type and L68Q-mutant hCC and then attempted to non-toxically interfere with the aggregation of the amyloid-producing proteins. The researchers also studied a supplement called N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), which is sometimes prescribed to break up mucous in the lung and has also been shown to protect against the toxic liver damage caused by an acetaminophen overdose, to determine whether it had an effect on hCC-amyloid protein deposits in skin biopsies of patients with a known diagnosis of HCCAA.

The researchers found that treating these cell lines with NAC breaks the oligomers into monomers, or molecules that have been separated from the chain that brings them together. This in turn helps to prevent the formation of amyloid-producing proteins that lead to the amyloid deposits implicated in strokes and other impairments. The researchers also performed skin biopsies on six patients with the L68Q-hCC variant taking NAC to determine levels of hCC-amyloid protein deposits following treatment. Five of the six patients saw between a 50% and 90% reduction of L68Q-hCC levels, suggesting that this variant is a clinical target for reducing agents such as NAC. This proof-of-concept study led to a clinical trial to see if these results are observed in a larger patient cohort.

“Amyloids cannot precipitate without aggregating, so if we can prevent that aggregation with a drug that is already available, then we could make an incredible difference in the lives of these patients,” Hakonarson said. “Additionally, since we already have genetic testing available to identify these patients, we could conceivably give this treatment early in life and potentially prevent that first stroke from ever occurring.”

The curious cases of nanoparticle induced amyloidosis during protein corona formation and anti-amyloidogenic nanomaterials: Paradox or prejudice?

Abstract

Protein corona (PC) formation remains a major hurdle in the successful delivery of nanomedicines to the target sites. Interacting proteins have been reported to undergo structural changes on the nanoparticle (NP) surface which invariably impacts their biological activities. Such structural changes are the result of opening of more binding sites of proteins to adsorb on the NP surface. The process of conversion of α-helix proteins to their β-sheet enriched counterpart is termed as amyloidosis and in case of PC formation, NPs apparently play the crucial role of being the nucleation centres where this process takes place. Conversely, increasing numbers of artificial nano-chaperones are being used to treat the protein misfolding disorders. Anti-amyloidogenic nanomaterials (NM) have been gaining utmost importance in inhibiting Aβ42 (hallmark peptide for Alzheimer's disease) and Hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL, model protein for systemic amyloidosis) aggregation. Interestingly, in this process, NPs inhibit protein β-sheet enrichment. These two seemingly opposite roles of NPs, propelling confirmatory change onto the smorgasbord of adsorbed native proteins and the ability of NPs in inhibiting amyloidosis creates a paradox, which has not been discussed earlier. Here, we highlight the key points from both the facets of the NP behaviour with respect to their physicochemical properties and the nature of proteins they adsorb onto them to unravel the mystery.

After we have isolated various cell types, we can methodically annotate the Atlas by labeling or “tagging” the different types of proteins found in each cell, which are what genes produce to control a wide range of bodily functions.

These tags are tiny fluorescent molecules that glow when viewed with a fluorescent microscope.

A less publicized initiative related to the $5 billion program includes work on brain-machine interfaces, devices that essentially translate thoughts into commands. One recent project is a wireless brain implant that can record, stimulate, and disrupt the movement of a monkey in real time.

Microwave radiofrequencies, 5G, 6G, graphene nanomaterials: Technologies used in neurological warfare

Despite reports and statements from the authorities presenting the constant deployment of new wireless communication technologies, as well as medical research into nanomaterials, as society’s ideal future, in-depth research into these scientific fields shows, above all, an objective linked to the current cognitive war. It could be hypothesized that, in the future, this aim will correspond to the control of humanity by machines.

INTRODUCTION

Unlike natural cosmic microwaves, microwaves from wireless communication technologies are polarized (electronic oscillations take place in specific directions/orientations), which can lead to irregular triggering of electrosensitive ion channels on cell membranes and cause numerous biological effects, up to and including deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) damage, cell death, or cancer;[113,114] modulated (used to encode information) and pulsed, at very low frequencies (close to brain waves).[106,115]

By the 1970s, the biological effects of microwaves (neurologic, endocrine gland activity, cardiovascular, hemodynamic, metabolic, gastric, ocular, testicles, bone marrow, hypertension, abortion, and behavioral), with exposures below intensities that cause heating, were already known,[14,27,106], especially from the military, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and World Health Organization (WHO).[1,79,117] The guidelines and standards selected by the WHO, through the International Commission on Non-ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), have therefore been deliberately chosen with full knowledge of the facts since the beginning of wireless technology deployment.

The standards defined by the ICNIRP serve as the basis for most recommendations and regulations in countries around the world. In 2020, ICNIRP guidelines, for all frequencies between 2 and 300 gigahertz (GHz), allow a 30-min average whole-body exposure of 10, 000, 000 µW/m² (10 W/m² or 1000 µW/cm²).[106] With regard to 5G technology, which uses frequencies above 6 GHz, and whose specificity is to send directional beams localized on the user [Figure 1], the ICNIRP authorizes a local exposure of 200,000,000 µW/m² (200 W/m²) for 6 min over an area of 4 cm², and 400,000,000 µW/m² over an area of 1 cm², for frequencies >30 GHz.[106] However, according to experts with no conflicts of interest, the maximum intensity should not exceed 10 µW/m².[106]

By comparison, for the whole frequency spectrum from 2G to 5G, the ICNIRP exposure limit recommendation for man-made electromagnetic radiation is ~10²¹–10²³-fold higher than the average radiation background of the Sun’s nonionizing radiation at Earth’s surface in the 2G–5G spectral range (~10⁻²³–10⁻²¹ mW/cm²).[55]

The massive rollout of 5G and 5G in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequency band (30–300 GHz) is scandalizing many scientists with no conflicts of interest. Indeed, since the start of wireless communication technologies using microwave frequency bands (0.3–300 GHz), the authorities in charge of health assessments have constantly covered up the truth about the dangerousness of these devices (2G, 3G, 4G, WiFi, WiMAX, DECT, Bluetooth, cell phone towers/masts/base stations, small cells, etc.).[52,70,106,107]

Below ICNIRP limits (non-thermal effects), microwave studies have shown brain tumors, neurological effects, increased oxidative stress, cancers, mutagenic effects due to DNA damage, neuropsychiatric disorders (behavioral changes), electro-hypersensitivity (EHS), increased blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability, inflammatory factors, increased male and female infertility, cellular stress response, immune suppression, and disturbance of energy metabolism.[12,15,16,18,19,74,78,70,112,115,116,136] Note that oxidative stress is associated with various chronic diseases and cancer and leads to aging.[63] As a result, constant exposure to electromagnetic radiation from wireless technologies accelerates aging.

Neuropsychiatric effects caused by non-thermal microwave radiofrequencies (RFs) have been widely documented: sleep disturbance, headache, depressive symptoms, fatigue, concentration dysfunction, memory changes, dizziness, irritability, electroencephalogram changes, etc.[111,112] These behavioral problems can extend to suicidal thoughts in children and adolescents.[65,109]

EHS was first described as microwave syndrome or microwave illness: behavioral and nervous system effects, fatigue, pain, depression, fainting, sleep disorders, etc.[27] Then, it was refined and completed by headache, tinnitus, hyperacusis, superficial and/or deep sensibility abnormalities, fibromyalgia, vegetative nerve dysfunction and reduced cognitive capability, transient cardiovascular dysfunction, and loss of appetite.[16,17]

Superimposing 5G radiation on an already toxic wireless radiation environment will exacerbate adverse health effects. The 5G mmWaves network will affect not only the skin and eyes but also the heart, liver, kidney, spleen tissue, blood, and bone marrow.[74] In mice, exposure to 5G at 4.9 GHz induces depressive-like behavior, which may be associated with neuronal pyroptosis in the amygdala.[120] 5G at 3.5 GHz can also rapidly cause microwave syndrome.[108] The interaction of mmWaves with the structure and function of pertinent cellular elements and cutaneous neuroreceptors in the skin are of special concern. There are not enough studies on 5G mmWaves to reach a confident judgment.[97]

Despite the many warnings sent to the European Union (EU) and WHO over several years by hundreds of scientists and publications, health authorities continue to ignore the biological effects of non-thermal microwave radiation,[52,106,107] leading to criminal attitude from the EU.[107] Although children are more vulnerable than adults to radiation from wireless technologies,[16] ICNIRP considers that the limit values it proposes provide greater protection for children, stipulating that they would be better thermoregulated than adults.[69]

Fauna and flora are also constantly under assault from wireless communication technologies [85,86] without any environmental standards being set.[87]

Thus, the protective limits given by ICNIRP in 2020 protect neither health nor the environment from RF microwaves, including 5G.[70,74,106]

In 2020, two Members (Buncher and Rivasi) of the European Parliament commissioned, coordinated, and published a report on the ICNIRP showing that this scientific organization is « captured by industry » and is therefore unable to provide a reliable assessment of current scientific knowledge.[129] It should be noted that Italy has a 10-time lower exposure limit with no detrimental effects for industry.[106] «The media, WHO, and the governments are not transmitting information to the population, who remain uninformed.»[12]

Consequently, the harmfulness of guidelines is intentional, and biological effects are not collateral damage. This study aims to show the real objectives of wireless communication technologies, disguised as scientific progress, and the methods (e.g., combined with nanomaterials) used to achieve them. The neurological system, mainly the human brain, is targeted.

INTENTIONAL IRRADIATION OF THE POPULATION

WHO, EU, pharmaceutical industry

Pharmaceutical companies are well known for their scientific misconduct, their conflicts of interest and their links with the WHO and EU, which induce political lies, as well as their links with the military.[37] It would seem that the same behavior applies to the telecommunications industry.[56,129] In 2019, a document from the French Ministry of Economy and Finance recommended, for health purposes, increasing the participation of pharmaceutical companies in the international race to use electromagnetic and acoustic non-ionizing waves.[41] This raises the possibility of direct conflicts of interest between the pharmaceutical and telecommunications industries.

Given the large number of known pathologies triggered by the non-thermal microwave RFs, as well as the conflicts of interest between pharmaceutical companies and the telecommunications industry with the WHO and EU, we wonder whether: Would not microwaves and wireless devices also serve to increase the number of pathologies (mainly neurodegenerative) to justify research into body-implantable medical nanotechnology (see later section on graphene)?

Microwave interaction with atmospheric particles

The vast majority of laboratory experiments do not take into account the synergistic adverse effects of other toxic stimuli (e.g., chemical and biological) acting in conjunction with wireless radiation.[74]

As microwave RFs induces BBB permeability, this inevitably leads to increased absorption of micro- and nanoparticles (e.g., aluminum), which can be found in growing quantities in the atmosphere, raising the number of cases of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.[36] Moreover, electromagnetic radiation modifies the physical properties of atmospheric microparticles. The number of particles increases, and their morphologies, movements, and trajectories are altered.[64] These additional parameters need to be taken into account for public health.

Army in background

In Australia, government advisory agencies must support government plans for an Internet of Things (IoT) and smart cities (dependent on wireless technologies) to the detriment of people’s health. In addition, changes to RF standards to protect health and the environment are not permitted if they are prejudicial to departments of defense or national security.[132]

At the beginning of the 1976 US military report, it is written that if microwave radiation exposure standards in the most advanced Western countries are as strict as in the (at the time) Communist countries, there could be adverse effects on industrial production and military functions.[1]

The military role is preponderant in understanding the deployment of wireless technologies, mainly 5G, and the authorized standards. For more than half a century, the US military has been seeking to master mind control using various technologies, including electromagnetic waves.[35] Connecting the human brain to the machine has been one of the most important military objectives (through DARPA) for decades (p. 20-32).[58]

Given that DNA damage is a known side-effect of microwave RFs,[115] we might also wonder whether one of the aims of this intentional microwave irradiation, at these levels of power density, would be to create a form of genetic mutation conducive to the future human-machine fusion (see last part of the article).

5G WILL MAINLY BE USED BY THE ARMY

The most important applications of 5G technology will not be in the civilian sector but in the military and secret services. Here are just a few examples of military applications that can be realized with 5G: Optimizing the use of hypersonic weapons; increasing the lethality and precision of killer drones and war robots by facial recognition and other features; developing “autonomous military vehicles” (i.e., robotic air, land, and sea vehicles capable of autonomous attack missions without even being remotely piloted). 5G mobile networks made up of assembly and disassembly towers will be set up in less than an hour. As part of NATO, the Pentagon is making it clear that allied territories need to be convinced of the military benefits of 5G. The network is being set up by private companies, which will charge civilian users for 5G, thus considerably reducing military expenditure compared with installing the network solely for the military in many countries.[38-40,49,66] 5G mmWaves will, therefore essentially have a warfare purpose.

5G technology originates from military technology because 5G phased array and beam steering capabilities originate from military radar technology.[85,132]

PULSED MICROWAVE BEAM ATTACKS

Between 1953 and 1976, the Soviets irradiated the US embassy in Moscow with microwaves (2.5–4.0 GHz at intensities of up to 18 µW/cm²) at power densities well below the current limits recommended by the ICNIRP.[27,100] Despite this, symptoms were consistent with microwave sickness syndrome.[27] The cancer cases were not publicly acknowledged, but the official report was seriously questioned.[27,100]

From 2016 to 2017, state and CIA personnel stationed in Cuba (Havana) complained of several symptoms with similarities to those in Moscow: noises (many diplomats heard chirping, ringing, or grinding noises at night during episodes reportedly triggering health problems), hearing loss, tinnitus, sleep problems, headaches, cognitive problems dominate, sensations of pressure or vibration, vision, balance, speech problems, nosebleeds, neurological symptoms, brain injury, and brain swelling.[56,100,130] The findings suggest potential exposure to directional phenomena,[130] which would correspond to the use of pulsed RF microwaves.[56]

Since 2018, other diplomats, as well as US intelligence personnel in various locations around the world (China, Germany, Australia, Russia, Taiwan, Washington, Austria, Georgia, Poland, Colombia, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan), have complained of the same symptoms, named “Havana syndrome” (problems with balance and vertigo, coordination, eye movement; anxiety; irritability; brain damage; “cognitive fog”).[84] The acute symptoms include headache and nausea immediately following the sounds of loud buzzing or bursts. Testimonies report a directional sound coming from above or behind the head.[94] According to a report by US National Academy of Sciences, directed, pulsed RF microwave energy is the most likely cause of these symptoms.[84,94]

There are new weapons using microwave frequencies, able to disrupt brain function without any burning sensation. «The microwave auditory effect occurs from a miniscule but rapid (µs) rise of temperature (10⁻⁶ °C) in the brain from the absorption of pulsed microwave radiation. The sudden rise in temperature creates a thermoelastic expansion of the brain matter, which can launch a pressure wave that propagates through the head and is detected by the sensory hair cells in the cochlea. The nerve signal is then relayed to the central auditory system for perception and recognition». This auditory effect of microwaves can become a non-lethal or lethal weapon.[95] The target would first feel the pressure wave as a sound. This has been confirmed by numerous American diplomats, spies, soldiers, and officials in Havana. A small piece of equipment would suffice.[20]

To generate a high-power microwave-induced acoustic pressure level inside the human brain, the theoretical temperature rise induced by microwave pulses should not exceed 1°C, which is “safe,” according to ICNIRP.[96]

THE NEW WAR

In 2021, two senior US Air Force officers presented a thesis at the Naval Postgraduate School (operated by the United States Navy) explaining that the war is now neurological: “Neurowar,” with cognitive functions as the main target.[58] Manipulating, influencing, and controlling both adversaries and the population are the objectives of this neurological warfare.[58] The manipulation of information to influence the population will have its limits when the population becomes aware of it. The next stage will, therefore, correspond directly to large-scale brain manipulation (p. 10).[58] For these senior US Air Force officers, Havana Syndrome (200 cases in 16 countries) corresponds to a new form of attack, but also of war, which is already underway, and whose target is the human brain (which is currently at the center of a biotechnological revolution).[58]

Neurological weapons aim to affect cognitive, emotional, and/or motor activity and capability to achieve specific and predictable behavior, that is, total mind control (p. 30-31).[58]

Neurological weapons can be either pharmacological, biological, or electromagnetic (RF directed energy weapons [DEWs], RF/acoustic weapons, ultrasonic weapons, high-powered microwaves, low-powered waves set at the right frequency, particle beams…) (p. 30-31).[58] The authors also suggest that cases of Havana Syndrome are the result of the use of a direct-energy microwave weapon (p. 86).[58] One of the problems of this new warfare (using DEWs) is the lack of medical strategies to deal with the unconventional injuries caused by this kind of weapon.[99]

Specific kinds of waves, modulated RFs between 0.4 and 3 GHz and an average power density at least as low as 400 µw/cm², can cause noises or sounds heard as real directly in the head or just behind without causing any discernible injury to neural or labyrinthine tissues.[53,58] However, high-frequency microwaves, in particular mmWaves, have characteristics that make them more suitable for “stealth” attacks. Indeed, mmWaves cause less interference with ordinary electronics and cannot be detected with ordinary RF survey meters. In addition, the equipment is smaller and can be placed much closer to the target, enabling higher exposure levels.[51] Starting in the 1970s, Russian scientists showed that low-intensity microwaves could be used as a weapon to disorient and affect behavior and during interrogations.[100]

Both in the 50–70s and from 2016 to 2021, the symptoms of microwave attacks correspond, for the most part, to the same symptoms as EHS.[56] It should be noted that, on average, 3–5% of the population in many countries or regions of the world is EHS, and up to 13.3% of the population may be RF-sensitive.[17]

While the United Nations has put in place treaties against biological and chemical weapons, most neurological weapons currently fall into a legal and regulatory vacuum, as they do not correspond to any of these categories (p. 34).[58]

Consequently, the effects of ambient electromagnetic pollution caused by the microwaves of wireless technologies are comparable to the effects of pulsed RF directed energy (DE) microwave weapons. In addition to making people ill, the constant increase in the ambient level of high-frequency electromagnetic waves is changing people’s behavior.

NON-LETHAL MICROWAVES DEWs

A DEW is a system using DE primarily as a means to incapacitate, damage, disable, or destroy enemy equipment, facilities, and/or personnel.[34] Specific examples of DE use by the military include lasers, RF devices, high-power microwave, millimeter wave, and particle beam technology.[125]

« Millimeter wave DE has various non-lethal military applications, including crowd control and area denial. Although proven to be very safe, millimeter wave energy can produce significant injuries ».[57]

Thermal effect of microwave DEWs

The Active Denial System (ADS) produces beam high power mmWaves (95 GHz) to non-lethally heat the topmost layer of human skin, acting to effectively deny people access to locations (p. 18).[125] The system is mounted on a vehicle and used for crowd control, but it could be miniaturized and carried by a person [Figure 2] (p. 98-100).[58] In 2010, a patent explained the operation of a portable weapon radiating millimeter microwaves from 94 to 96 GHz (without being limited to this frequency range) and able to vary the power density for non-lethal purposes.[98]

Auditory effect of microwave DEWs

In 1989, a patent showed that it was possible to induce sound in the head of an irradiated person using microwaves (0.1–10 GHz) modulated with a particular waveform while respecting the imposed standards.[22]

The US Army has developed a weapon system based on the auditory effect of microwaves, Mob Excess Deterrent Using Silent Audio (MEDUSA). The result is a strong sonic sensation in the human head when irradiated by specifically selected low-energy microwave pulses. It is specified that the system should be portable, require little energy, and be able to control a crowd or a single individual. At present, no one knows the status of this program.[20,96,126]

Rollout of 5G and wireless technologies analyzed from another viewpoint

In 2001, a document from NASA showed how the style of warfare could evolve in the 2025s. Attack and/or retaliation techniques include the use of microwave RFs. This kind of radiation corresponds to an anti-functional and anti-personnel weapon and is apparently legal. Used at high power, this weapon acts by heat source, but when used at low power (in µw/cm² with a frequency range of 0.4–3 GHz) modulated at low frequency, this weapon alters cerebral functions, diminishes behavioral performance, and can become lethal. There is also talk of microwave RF towers used for selective anti-personnel purposes.[23]

As it is difficult to locate the source of the DE, DEWs are often used in special or covert operations. Authors of the US Air Force report assert that the world has reached a “ tipping point ” in which DE is now essential to successful military operations.[125]

Matthew and Kazaure[102] showed that due to the dipolar nature of the human body, the rollout of 5G technology at frequencies above 20 GHz will produce effects such as heating up of the body tissues due to electromagnetic field induction. This study established that any attempt to deploy 5G technology at ultra-high frequencies above 20 GHz corresponds to the deliberate use of an unconventional chemical weapon.[102]

Note that 5G mmWaves will use a frequency range extending to levels above 95 GHz, depending on the country.[118] Frequency bands up to 300 GHz have also been considered. In addition, the 6G network (planned for 2030) will add the frequency bands terahertz (THz), i.e. 300 GHz to 3 THz (submillimeter waves), to the mmWave bands, inducing a massive deployment of small cell networks.[13,29,31] In 2019, the French document from the French Ministry of Economy and Finance foresees the use of 5G at 38 and 60 GHz inside buildings. This document specifies that the induced accumulation of exposures (2G+, 3G, 4G, 5G, and IoT), their continuous nature over time, as well as the possible effects of millimeter emissions from the associated satellite coverage, have not been the subject of health and environmental impact studies (p. 33).[41]

NANOMATERIALS: THE CASE OF GRAPHENE

The ideal nanomaterial for future medicine

From 2013 to 2023, the EU launched a huge research program on graphene (just one layer of carbon atoms whose stacking forms graphite), with the aim of its commercial application in many sectors, including biomedical and healthcare.[59,93] Graphene can be used to detect, treat, and manage diseases of the nervous system using neural implants (which can be used to record or stimulate electrical activity in nerve tissue) or for drug delivery.[44] According to the roadmap for graphene use in the medical sector, biosensors are already in use, neural interface from 2029, drug delivery, and bioelectronic medicine from 2030.[61] At the same time, the « Human Brain Project » was launched with the aim of better understanding how the brain works, mainly for medical purposes.[68]

Graphene oxide (GO) is considered a very good candidate for future vaccine adjuvants.[10,26,119,127,134,140] Graphene is also widely studied in dentistry, mainly as an anesthetic, but also for its antimicrobial action, regenerative dentistry, bone tissue engineering, drug delivery, physicomechanical property enhancement of dental biomaterials, and oral cancer treatment.[7,28,88,90,91,103,104,122] Inhalation of GO (for diagnostic purposes and to deliver drugs for respiratory diseases) is also being studied.[5]

In addition to the recognized biological toxicity of graphene-family nonmaterial,[110,133] these nanoparticles are already present in the environment and accumulate, for example, in food-chain plants.[131]

COVID-19 vaccines

In 2022, a study showed that among various types of nanomaterials, GO and carbon nanotubes (cylindrically shaped nanostructures made by sheets of graphene rolled up to form hollow tubes) are among the possible adjuvants for COVID-19 vaccines.[4]

The presence of graphene in COVID-19 vaccines is totally refuted by the European Medicines Agency (EMA).[42] However, not only EMA is tainted,[37] but also the presence of graphene, micro- and nanostructures as well as undeclared metal-containing components have been repeatedly detected in COVID-19 vaccines. Some of these results, discovered by several respected scientists in their fields, have not been published in peer-reviewed journals [Figure 3],[9,24,25], while others are available in the scientific literature.[71,72,137] GOs, reduced GOs (rGOs), and the related derivatives possess self-assembly capabilities enabling the construction of advanced graphene-based materials or functional systems,[124] which could partly explain the detection of certain nanostructures. By culture of COVID-19 vaccine samples (mainly Pfizer and Moderna), a study showed (using a stereomicroscope) the self-assembly of artificial structures of various shapes (animated worm-like entities, discs, chains, spirals, tubes, right-angle structures containing other artificial entities within them, etc.), reacting, among other factors, to several frequencies of electromagnetic fields. The authors of this study assume that some form of nanotechnology (without specifying the exact nature of its components) was intentionally added to COVID-19 vaccines, whose purpose is to self-assemble into pre-programmed structures under the effect of different energy sources.[82]

In addition, analyses of blood samples from subjects after injections of COVID-19 vaccines showed the presence of particles, which, according to the authors of these publications, would correspond to GO.[33,72,83] This presence of graphene would contribute to the side effects associated with COVID-19 vaccines.[6]

Suitable for very high frequencies

Graphene can be used to build nanoantennas and transceivers.[29] Graphene nanomaterials (e.g., GO and rGO) are particularly well suited to interconnecting biomaterials with RF microwaves.[80] Graphene is widely used for its electrical properties and high conductivity.[32,60] In addition, GO has a high potential for transmitting signals at GHz ranges (0.5–40 GHz),[73] and millimeter frequencies seem perfectly adapted to graphene micro antennas.[76] A study showed that using a system of GO nanoparticles reacting to the electric field, a cell phone can control the rate of drug release remotely for on demand administration,[121] representing an example of a partnership between the pharmaceutical and telecommunications industries.

Moreover, a graphene monolayer can multiply frequencies from GHz to THz, generating electronic signals in the THz range with very high efficiency.[45,62] Graphene will, therefore, be well suited to directional radiation in the THz band for 6G communications.[2]

Intrabody nanorobots

The literature confirms that graphene can be used as a base material for intrabody nanomachines (sensors, routers, antennas, etc.),[67,81,92,135] with the aim of wireless nanocommunications through internet between the human body and objects (Internet of Nano Things).[11,77] Carbon nanotubes are able to create hybrid systems with the natural neural system and affect specific cell behaviors.[46] Graphene can also be used to create a brain interface due to its perfect compatibility with the brain’s neural system,[47] opening the way to the exploitation and control of the brain.[50] The hydrogel allows these graphene nanomaterials to be accepted by the human body, thus representing the ideal interface in human-machine fusion.[138]

To perform complex tasks, intrabody nanorobots need to collaborate and organize themselves within a nanonetwork that can be hybrid wired/wireless. Communication between intrabody nanonetworks can be electromagnetic or molecular (the absence or presence of a certain type of molecule to encode messages digitally).[135] In addition, they self-power by harvesting energy from their environment (blood vessels) and their energy is mainly used for the transmission and reception of wireless communication signals.[8]

The efficient transmission of nanotechnology signals and data over the nanonetwork is managed by a routing system called Coordinate and Routing System for Nanonetworks (CORONA).[123] The most suitable frequency band for these intrabody nanonetworks seems to be THz.[3,81] The few studies concerning the biological effects of THz already show consequences such as modification of the properties of cell membranes, pore formation, modulation of cell viability and proliferation. However, the authors point out that there is a lack of standardized experimental methods.[30]

Therefore, as some scientists suggest, these micro- and nanostructures observed in COVID-19 vaccines could be part of an intrabody network of wireless nanomachines, but the many conflicts of interest within the health authorities (e.g., EMA and WHO) inevitably lead to highly biased expert assessments and responses, which means that the public is disinformed by part of the scientific community, politicians, and the media.[37]

In addition, if this graphene-based nanomachine technology has been injected through COVID-19 vaccines to react with the electromagnetic environment, its operation with the GHz band is not only current but also appears to be evolutionary and projected in time to be activated by the THz waves of the 6G network around the 2030s.

HUMAN-MACHINE FUSION (CYBORG)

Scientific publications and military documents clearly show that the goal for the coming years is human-machine fusion. Medicine will first employ graphene brain implants.[21] Carbon nanomaterials can be connected to implantable brain-computer interfaces (BCIs),[89] and graphene nanosensors appear suitable for operating non-invasive BCIs.[48]

Via the vascular circulation, nanorobots (some carbon nanomaterials are being studied) could cross the BBB and attach themselves to the axons of neurons in the brain, which could then connect to the internet cloud through a BCI.[101] It should be noted that optimizing a BCI seems to require the intervention of artificial intelligence (AI) to study brain functions, but also to identify and monitor the neurons that control behavior.[139] The huge volumes of data exchanged between the cloud and the human brain will require AI to manage these interactions, too.[101] 6G network applications (2030) will enable wireless brain-computer interaction.[31] While 5G will enable wireless communication between simple physical objects (IoT), 6G, in which AI will play a key role, will bring networked communication of humans, processes, files, and objects (Internet of Everything (IoE)), such as people-to-machine and people-to-people connections via the internet.[13,75]

In 2023, a NATO document on the biological functioning of cognitive warfare shows that one of the most promising nanotechnology projects is the development of integrated synthetic DNA. Although the document does not specify the materials used, this synthetic organic DNA could allow the creation of human-machine interfaces and is often referred to as the 47^th human chromosome. The paper explains that neural nanotechnology can be used to bring nano-sized robots closer to a neuron via the bloodstream and enable the human brain to be linked directly (i.e., not intercepted by our senses) to a computer using AI. The author specifies that this is a two-way street: such an IA will, in turn, be linked to a human brain.[128]

The army uses neurotechnology to treat or “improve” soldiers.[58] Thus, advances in military neurotechnology, robotics, and AI will make the « cyborg warrior » (cyborg: Cybernetic organism), a weaponized brain-computer network powered by AI and neurocognitive augmentation.[105] In 2019, a US army document, coauthored by renowned neuroscientist James Giordano, shows that human-machine fusion will appear before 2050, with the aim of improving functional and structural human capacities through the use of genetic engineering, synthetic biology, nanotechnology, AI, or any number of emerging technologies.[43] The four main objectives are ocular enhancements, restoration and programmed muscular control, auditory enhancement, and direct neural enhancement of the human brain for two-way data transfer. The assembly of nanoparticles in the brain (thus forming a BCI) could be positioned using directed magnetic fields. Although this report aims to present military cyborgs, the authors point out that not only will the civilian sector be in demand, but it is the medical sector that will familiarize the population with human-machine fusion and provide the military with a large proportion of the technological advances. In addition, the public will need to be educated about the benefits of becoming a cyborg. Cinema, media, literature, and governments must build messages to remove barriers to the adoption of these new technologies.[43]

The “benefits” (partly therapeutic, as it is also a question of increasing the capabilities of humans and other living beings) of designing hybrid systems between living beings and robotic systems have already begun in civil science.[54]

CONCLUSION

Scientific literature shows that the use of modulated/pulsed/polarized microwave RFs from wireless technologies, even well below international limits designed to protect the public, causes a number of very serious health consequences: (1) increased oxidative stress (itself linked to numerous pathologies, inflammation, DNA damage, and aging). This oxidative status also generates cellular stress and, consequently the cell’s response to this stress (i.e., cell cycle arrest, the repair process, and then the elimination of damaged molecular debris). If stress is too great and there is excessive molecular damage, the cell is irreparable and dies (apoptosis). This artificially induced premature cell death can lead to degenerative diseases. If repair is incomplete, the proliferation of damaged cells can trigger cancer. The cellular stress response to an electromagnetic field depends on the type of cell, the duration of exposure, and the characteristics of the electromagnetic field.[78] (2) Changes in intracellular calcium metabolism. (3) Structural injuries of immune tissues and functional impairment in immune cells. (4) Damage to the reproductive system. (5) Brain cancers (glioma, meningioma, acoustic neuroma). (6) Increased BBB permeability (allowing certain toxins direct access to the central nervous system). (7) Increased risk of cardiomyopathy. (8) Microwave RF also leads to the onset of microwave syndrome, also known as EHS (i.e., headache, tinnitus, chronic insomnia, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, irritability, depressive tendencies, cognitive dysfunction, and impaired memory). Depending on the individual’s level of sensitivity and the duration of exposure, submission to the electromagnetic waves of wireless technologies induces behavioral changes.

NATO explains that cognitive warfare consists of exploiting emotions rooted in the subconscious, targeting the amygdala through the use of nanotechnology, biotechnology, and information technology, among others. The ultimate aim is to alter our perception of reality to affect our decision-making. NATO insists that this is a war without rules, that it is not science fiction, and that it is already happening, but also that cognitive attack is aimed at both military personnel and civilians. Targeting is hyper-personalized. Among civilians, those most vulnerable to such attacks may be, for example, those who lack confidence in governance and social structures.[128]

• The pharmaceutical industry is studying and introducing to the market a nanomaterial (graphene) highly conductive of electromagnetic waves

• The pharmaceutical industry is known for its conflicts of interest with WHO, the EU, and its military links.

Consequently, we can conclude that the irradiation, with such standards, by the wireless technologies developed by the telecommunications industry corresponds to an intentional strategy from the military-industrial complex and part of the political establishment to affect the cognitive functions of the population. Graphene nanoparticles exacerbate, or will exacerbate (depending on whether they are already present in the body), the deleterious neurological effects of 5G and will progressively connect the human brain to the Internet through 6G, with the aim (a few years later) of merging man with machine [Figure 4].

Since the official channel for health information (WHO, media, and politics) is corrupted, it becomes necessary to disseminate verified and verifiable information. In addition, it is essential that all scientists, with no conflicts of interest, capable of publishing scientifically, with the appropriate equipment and an approved laboratory, analyze the components of all vaccines (including those in COVID-19) as well as dental anesthetics and publish their results in good scientific journals. If it proves that organisms indeed contain graphene, studies on chelating agents such as N-acetylcysteine and calcium disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid would be necessary. It is also becoming vital to stay as far away as possible from powerful sources of high-frequency electromagnetic radiation (antennas, WiFi, etc.) and to use all types of wireless technology as little as possible.

In 2025, uninhabited aerospace vehicles (UAV) are routinely used for weather-modification operations. By cross-referencing desired attack times with wind and thunderstorm forecasts and the SPOT satellite’s projected orbit, the WFSE generates mission profiles for each UAV. The WFSE guides each UAV using near-real-time information from a networked sensor array. Prior to the attack, which is coordinated with forecasted weather conditions, the UAVs begin cloud generation and seeding operations. UAVs disperse a cirrus shield to deny enemy visual and infrared (IR) surveillance. Simultaneously, microwave heaters create localized scintillation to disrupt active sensing via synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems such as the commercially available Canadian search and rescue satellite-aided tracking (SARSAT) that will be widely available in 2025. Other cloud seeding operations cause a developing thunderstorm to intensify over the target, severely limiting the enemy’s capability to defend. The WFSE monitors the entire operation in real-time and notes the successful completion of another very important but routine weather-modification mission. This scenario may seem far-fetched, but by 2025 it is within the realm of possibility. The next chapter explores the reasons for weather-modification, defines the scope, and examines trends that will make it possible in the next 30 years.

suppression and intensification of weather patterns.

In extreme cases, it might involve the creation of completely new weather patterns,

attenuation or control of severe storms,

or even

Preventable Adverse Drug Reactions: A focus on drug interactions

ADRs are one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in health care.

Studies conducted on hospitalized patient populations have placed much higher estimates on the overall incidence of serious ADRs.

These studies estimate that 6.7% of hospitalized patients have a serious adverse drug reaction with a fatality rate of 0.32%.²

If these estimates are correct, then there are more than 2,216,000 serious ADRs in hospitalized patients, causing over 106,000 deaths annually.

If true, then ADRs are the 4th leading cause of death—ahead of pulmonary disease, diabetes, AIDS, pneumonia, accidents, and automobile deaths.

These statistics do not include the number of ADRs that occur in ambulatory settings. Also, it is estimated that over 350,000 ADRs occur in U.S. nursing homes each year.³

However, whatever the true number is, ADRs represent a significant public health problem that is, for the most part, preventable.

One estimate of the cost of drug-related morbidity and mortality is $136 billion annually,¹ which is more than the total cost of cardiovascular or diabetic care in the United States. In addition, one out of 5 injuries or deaths per year to hospitalized patients may be as a result of ADRs.²

To exemplify this point, 64% of all patient visits to physicians result in prescriptions.¹

One individual report CAN make a difference.

Many drug withdrawals began with one clinical report that initiated further investigation.

In the example case in this module, a single report ultimately led to the removal of terfenadine from the market. This report potentially saved many lives and led to a better understanding of the mechanism involved in causing torsades de pointes. Almost all drugs are now evaluated prior to being released on the market for their potential to induce cardiac arrhythmias, also as a result of this single case report.

Conclusions. -The incidence of serious and fatal ADRs in US hospitals was found to be extremely high. While our results must be viewed with circumspection because of heterogeneity among studies and small biases in the samples, these data nevertheless suggest that ADRs represent an important clinical issue. The Zika Response Group began in the winter of 2016.

Nanotechnology is proving to be at the heart of this funding.[2] In the United States, the National Nanotechnology Initiative has provided at least €1.2 billion annually since 2013.[3] Despite this funding, there is growing necessity to improve translation as there are many pitfalls in current preclinical assessment.[4]

Immunotoxic effects related to cancer nanomedicines are major clinical roadblocks that must be carefully considered to improve translation in the future.[5]

Nanoparticles aim to reduce immunotoxicities associated with conventional drugs but can also indirectly induce many immunotoxic effects of their own.

Their unique physiochemical characteristics (PCC), such as size and large surface area, make them susceptible to undesirable interactions when administered intravenously that can hinder their development as potential cancer nanomedicines.

This review highlights

the broad range of unintentional immunological interactions

associated with various nanoparticles researched in the area of cancer nanomedicine.

If a nanoparticle undesirably interacts with a component of the coagulation system, an activation or inhibition of coagulation factors can disrupt the hemostatic balance either reducing the coagulation response below healthy levels or enhancing coagulation resulting in procoagulant activity.[15]

This disruption is associated with many toxic effects within the coagulation system including disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)[16] which, depending whether it occurs acute or chronically,

can induce abnormal hemorrhaging[17] or intravascular thrombosis[18] respectively.

DIC occurs through depletion of coagulation factors and, if left untreated,

can lead to organ failure and even death.[19]

Alterations to the hemostatic balance can be induced directly or indirectly through various mechanisms by nanoparticles including

platelet factor upregulation, platelet membrane damage, and endothelial cell interactions

(Table 1).

Moreover, circulating tumor cells are known to have a procoagulant phenotype and, therefore,

unintentional procoagulant effects may potentially enhance tumor progression

by contributing to metastasis.[30]

It can also be hijacked however, to deliver non-biodegradable nanoparticles to specific organs (e.g., liver, bone marrow, and spleen)[43] through the reticuloendothelial system (RES) or sites of inflammation (e.g., cancer, arthritis) which macrophages preferably localize to.[44] Unfortunately, this phagocytic uptake can also cause healthy tissue damage to the host leading to symptoms like rash, dyspnea, flushing, hypertension, hypotension (pseudoallergic reactions), and even fatal cardiopulmonary syndrome in rare cases.[45]

Recent papers have pinpointed these PEG-associated effects to naturally occurring anti-PEG antibodies detected in 44.3% of healthy human donors.[58]

This matches up well with the values suggested for hypersensitivity reactions mentioned previously.

In the last 10 years, however, four initially successful IONP (Iron Oxide Nano Particles) have been discontinued in the clinic by either the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) or EMA: Combidex in 2007, Feridex in 2008, Resovist in 2009, and Gastromark in 2012.[48,71]

CARPA and severe anaphylactic reactions has been a noted side effect with clinically approved IONP and are one of the major reasons behind these withdrawals.[48]

CARPA is one of the most significant immunotoxicity challenges for cancer nanomedicines in the pipeline, contributing to the clinical withdrawal of a host of IONP and resulting in the release of safety reports for both liposomal and iron oxide nanoformulations by EMA.

Moreover, immunotoxic studies without consideration to endotoxin contamination within the nanoformulation offer little to the reader in attempting to understand these associated effects.

Considering the regulatory position on this matter, cancer nanomedicines have been approved as both drug products and medical devices. Both of these categories have their own established regulatory paths and endotoxin limits agreed between the FDA and EMA.

As discussed here and in a recent paper by Li et al.,[155] there is

a serious lack of consideration to potential endotoxin contamination

in the literature when it comes to the assessment of immunotoxicity with nanoparticles.

Very little of the available literature includes an endotoxin contamination assessment, making interpreting these results extremely difficult.

Remarkably,

of the 63 papers depicting immunological effects with nanomedicines described previously, only 8 papers (12.7%) included any endotoxin contamination assessment of their nanomedicine

(values exclude papers testing already clinically approved cancer nanomedicines). Furthermore, endotoxins wide range of signaling means it can give false positive/negative results on a wide array of immunological pathways. It is therefore necessary to assess endotoxin contamination before any immunological assessment to avoid these common mistakes.

3.2. Sterilization and Depyrogenation

Further considerations to avoiding contamination in nanoformulations involve sterilization and depyrogenation. The current recommended sterility assurance level of a final product is 10−6 , [156] meaning for a nanoformulation to be sterile there can be no more than one viable microorganism in one million parts of the final product. Many methods of sterilization and depyrogenation are available but can potentially alter the PCC of nanoparticles. Vetten et al. reviews these depyrogenation and sterilization methods and concludes that there is not one single method sufficiently capable of purifying all nanoparticles and each nanoformulation must be considered in a case-by-case basis.[157]

3.3. In Vitro Immunotoxicity Assays

As discussed above, there is

a broad spectrum of interactions with nanoparticles when introduced into the blood circulation.

Toxicity of GFNs in organs

In conclusion, the lung injury induced by GFNs has been studied in several studies, the results of which have demonstrated inflammatory cell infiltration, pulmonary edema and granuloma formation in the lungs.

However, only a few specific studies have evaluated in other organs, such as the liver, spleen, and kidney, and the injury symptoms, damage index and level of damage to these internal organs were not fully investigated.

Moreover, studies on the neurotoxicity of GFNs are quite rare; no data has revealed which nerves or brain areas experience damage, nor have the related behavioural manifestations been studied.

The developmental toxicity of GFNs may induce structural abnormalities, growth retardation, behavioural and functional abnormalities, and even death. A study on the reproductive and developmental toxicity of GFNs will be extremely significant and gain extensive attention in the future.

Almost all the GFNs toxicity studies were short-period experiments, and no studies have investigated long-term chronic toxic injury.

However, based on studies of other nanomaterials toxicity, long-term GFNs exposure may be an important factor harming health [107–109]. Therefore, the long-term study of GFNs is necessary.

After reviewing many studies, it can be concluded that the toxicity of graphene is influenced by multiple factors. Those factors combined to largely change the toxicity of GFNs in many cases.

ROS production leading to oxidative stress

Oxidative stress arises when increasing levels of ROS overwhelm the activity of antioxidant enzymes, including catalase, SOD, or glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) [174]. ROS act as second messengers in many intracellular signalling cascades and lead to cellular macromolecular damage, such as membrane lipid breakdown, DNA fragmentation, protein denaturation and mitochondrial dysfunction, which greatly influence cell metabolism and signalling [175–177].

The interactions of GO with cells can lead to excessive ROS generation, which is the first step in the mechanisms of carcinogenesis, ageing, and mutagenesis [83, 122]. Oxidative stress had a significant role in GO-induced acute lung injury [30], and the inflammatory responses caused by oxidative stress often emerged upon exposure to GFNs [133, 177, 178].

Once injected into the patient, they can locate themselves at specific places in the brain, and pick up impulses which would normally be delivered to the body's motor neurons. These impulses can be used to drive external prosthetics, such as a robotic arm. Thus, it would help a lot of people from overcoming their disabilities.

Body surveillance:

Continuous monitoring of vitals and wireless transmission could be possible using nanobots, leading to a quantum leap in diagnostics.

. This would also help in rapid response in case of sudden change in vitals or could warn against a possibility of a risk, such as high blood glucose in case of diabetics. Also multi-functional bots could convert themselves into stents; say to open up a blockage in an artery. The bot itself can be used as a tool, to remove unwanted materials such as blockages in the circulatory system. Nanobots could be used in large quantities inside the body to sense and repair anomalies/abnormalities. Current macroscopic robots are being programmed and tested with what is known as "swarm intelligence" in which they share information available to each one of them, pool it together, and take collective decisions.

Delicate surgeries:

Surgeries such as those of the eye are even today performed successfully only by a few skilled surgeons. Immense risk is involved in these delicate surgeries and they require a steady hand as well as a strong constitution. It may soon be possible to take the human element of risk out of this equation. Micro surgery of the eye as well as surgeries of the retina and surrounding membranes could soon be performed using nanobots. In addition, instead of injecting directly into the eye, nanobots could be injected elsewhere in the body and guided to the eye to deliver drugs, if necessary. Similarly, other difficult surgeries will also benefit from advances in nanorobotics. Foetal surgery, risky even today due to high mortality rate of either the baby or the mother, could soon have a 100% success rate, due to the fact that nanobots can provide better access to the required area inducing minimal trauma.

Cancer treatment:

This is probably the main reason for the development of nanorobotics.

Primary nanobots are sent to the target tissue (tumour) to inflame it. This is partly a machine gun approach; a lot of the bots will be wasted. However, only the tumour is inflamed and not any other tissue in the entire body. Now, a second wave of bots is sent, to target the inflamed tissue. This wave of bots contains the actual chemotherapy drug. It releases its payload i.e. the drug only after sensing the inflamed tissue. Thus, we have a highly concentrated targeted action, with no peripheral impact. We could liken it to a sniper's rifle.

By 2030, nanobots are project to advance towards amazing breakthroughs in healthcare. By then, tiny nanobots will float through our bloodstream on a mission to prevent sickness.

This technique is basically one of illumination. A radioactive fluid is introduced into the circulatory system and its progress throughout the body is tracked by means of a fluoroscope or some other radiation-sensitive imaging system. The major advantage of this technique is that it follows the exact same path that our microrobot would take to reach the operations site. By sufficiently increasing the resolution of the imaging system, and obtaining enough data to generate a three dimensional map of the route, it would provide valuable guidance information for the microrobot.

The active form of this technique would be to have a small amount of radioactive substance as part of the microrobot. This would allow its position to be tracked throughout the body at all times.

Additionally, since the technique would not require the microrobot to use any power, or require a mechanism of any sort, it would greatly simplify the design of the microrobot.

While there are risks from radiation, the amount of radioactive substance used would not be even a fraction of the amount used in radioactive dye diagnosis.

In the first case, the microrobot would have electrodes mounted on its outer casing that would combine with the electrolytes in the blood to form a battery. This would result in a low voltage, but it would last until the electrodes were used up. The disadvantage of this method is that in the case of a clot or arteriosclerosis, there might not be enough blood flow to sustain the required power levels. Emerging nanomaterials need to undergo urgent testing to assess their effects on health and the environment, the UK’s Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution said in a report released this week.

It says nanotechnology-based products are hitting the market without being properly assessed for safety – and that’s a risk too far.

But there are safety rules for all consumer products, aren’t there?

Yes, but because nanomaterials are often made using chemicals like silver and carbon that are considered safe when used on a macro scale, the commission says they are slipping under the regulatory net when used at the nanoscale – without any consideration of the potentially adverse physical or chemical effects their novel nanostructures may have on people, animals, and the environment.

What does the commission want?

The commission is calling for the European Union to extend its regulatory regime for chemicals (REACH) to properly assess nanomaterials and their unique properties.

In the UK, they want the Department of the Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to develop and undertake tests on products that contain nanomaterials, and develop gadgets that detect, for instance, nanomaterials like carbon nanotubes when they become airborne.

“We have no means of detecting buckyballs or nanotubes in the environment right now,” says John Lawton, the RCEP’s chairman.

Haven’t we been here before?

Yes. But since 2004 when the Royal Society and Royal Academy of Engineering first said that a programme of research was necessary to ensure the safety of nanotech products, the field has moved on in leaps and bounds.

“The rate of nanotechnology innovation now far outstrips our capacity to respond to the risks,” says Lawton.

The RCEP thinks the arrival of products in our high streets means it’s time to reiterate the need for safety tests – as the earlier call fell on deaf ears in government. It also wants to avoid polarising public opinion, as happened with genetic modification.

How many novel technologies are we talking about?

The number of patents filed on nanomaterials worldwide by 2006 reached 1600 – and that growth has continued exponentially. According to the Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies in Washington, DC, there are at least 600 products on the global market that claim to contain a nanomaterial as a key ingredient, he adds.

What kind of products contain nanomaterials?

Well, the range is broad – and there could be health and environmental problems with any of them. They include sunscreens, cleaning products, anti-odour treatments for clothes, cosmetics, smart plastics, ceramics, self-cleaning glasses, composites, carbon-fibre-based textiles and other products containing nanotubes and buckyballs.

Which ones are causing concern?

All of them, to some extent.

But the commission singled out two. “Nanosilver” – a bactericide which slows the formation of odour-forming bugs in clothes like socks, underpants and T-shirts.

The second is a textile comprising spun fibres made from carbon nanotubes that could save the clothing industry a fortune by making clothes that don’t need dyes – their thread diameter dictates their colour through refraction effects.

How might these products cause harm?

“Nanosilver is biocidal to a remarkable extent – it’s extremely toxic to microorganisms,” says Lawton. In fact, it will kill twice the number of bacteria that bleach can.

When flushed into water courses, no-one knows what could happen. It could stop the biochemical reactions that make your local sewage-processing plant work. Or it may damage aquatic life – buckyballs have already been shown to cause brain damage in fish.

There have been reports that the carbon fibres in clothing could produce asbestosis-like lung diseases, and that spilled nanotubes could damage ecosystems.

Why not just ban nanotech products?

The RCEP thinks the advantages to society of nanotechnologies are too great to lose. “On balance there are no grounds for a blanket ban,” says Lawton.

Instead, he simply wants a major increase in the amount of testing to assess risk – prioritising the materials that may present the greatest risk to the environment and human health.

“Research gaps need to be addressed urgently, especially given the long lead times involved in developing and putting in place testing arrangements that will inform regulatory and legislative processes,” he says.

Smart meters are "dangerously insecure," according to researcher Netanel Rubin – who claimed the gear uses weak encryption, relies on easily pwned protocols, and can be programmed to explode.

The software vulnerability hunter derided global efforts to roll out the meters as reckless, saying the "dangerous" devices are a risk to all connected smart home devices.

Smart meters can communicate with networked devices inside homes, such as air conditioners, fridges, and the like. A hacker who could infiltrate the internet-connected meters could control those gadgets and appliances and potentially unlock doors.

They could also manipulate the meter's code to cause fires, something that's trivially easy using mains supplies, Rubin claimed. You'd be forgiven for thinking fuses would prevent such a blaze, although the researcher is convinced the hardware can be tricked into overexerting itself and exploding.

"An attacker who controls the meter also controls its software, allowing them to literally blow the meter up," he told (https://web.archive.org/web/20220525130108/https://fahrplan.events.ccc.de/congress/2016/Fahrplan/events/8272.html) the Chaos Communications Congress in Hamburg, Germany, earlier this month.

"If an attacker could hack your meter, he could have access to all the devices connected to the meter. The smart meter network in its current state is completely exposed to attackers."

Rubin was accused of fear-mongering by the conference's audience. He shot back that he wanted to grab the public's attention with dire warnings of exploding boxes – claims that reminded El Reg of an old infamous World Weekly News spoof.

He fended off comments from the audience that triggering explosions through hacking was not possible, alleging it had been demonstrated in the US. (The Register could not at the time of writing verify that claim. We've written a ton about insecure smart meters, though, of course.)

While the physical security of the meter is typically strong, hackers still have plenty of wireless vectors to attack and exploit to compromise the equipment, he argued.

Rubin listed smart meters' use of Zigbee and GSM protocols, often left insecure and unencrypted, or at best secured with a GPRS A5 algorithm that is known to be broken for more than five years. Attackers can also wirelessly force all units in an area to connect to malicious base stations using their hardcoded login credentials. This access grants miscreants direct access to the smart meter firmware for deep exploitation.

"All meters of the same utility use the same APN credentials," Rubin told the applauding audience. "One key to rule them all."

Worse, Rubin found smart meters that hand over critical network keys when communicating with home devices without checking if the gadgets should be trusted. This opens an avenue for criminals to set up equipment that masquerades as home devices, steals the keys, and impersonates meters.

"You can communicate with and control any device in the house from way across the street, open up locks, cause a short in the electricity system, whatever we want to do. A simple segmentation fault is enough to crash the meter, causing a blackout at the premises," Rubin said.

He says these security shortcomings would have been eliminated if proper encryption was used, and the network was segmented instead of being treated as a "giant LAN."

In 2009, in Puerto Rico, bill fraudsters were able to exploit similar security holes to snatch US$400m. Rubin said the meters' ability to communicate with internal smart home devices is merely an immediate concern – it will be way worse when utilities expand in the future to form city-wide mesh networks with city smart appliances.

"The entirety of the electricity grid, your home, your city, and everything in between will be in control of your energy utility, and that's a bit scary," he said.

About 40 percent of the smart meter market is held by Itron, Landis and Gyr, and Elster. The European Union wants to replace more than 70 percent of electricity meters with smart versions at a cost of €45 billion. There are already some 100 million meters installed globally.

Rubin expects a sharp increase in hacking attempts, and called on utility companies to "step up." He said he will release an open-source fuzzing tool to help security researchers test their own meters. "Reclaim your home, before someone else does," he said.

Serious vulnerabilities in smart electricity meters continue to expose both consumers and electric utilities to cyberattacks. However, some have questioned claims that hackers can cause these devices to explode.

However, according to Netanel Rubin, who recently founded Vaultra, a company that develops security solutions for the smart industry, smart meters continue to lack proper security mechanism, allowing malicious actors to use these devices to target both consumers and utilities.

In a presentation at the 33rd Chaos Communication Congress (33C3) in Hamburg, Germany, Rubin analyzed the methods that can be used to hack smart meters. The expert said that while physical attacks are more difficult due to various protection mechanisms, remote software hacking can be much easier to conduct.

The protocols used by smart meters include ZigBee, which is used for communicating with smart appliances in the consumer’s home, and GSM, which is used for communications between the meter and the electric utility. Both ZigBee and GSM have been known to contain serious vulnerabilities, and they have been poorly implemented in smart meters.

Even more worrying, Rubin said, is that since smart meters can communicate with all the smart devices in the consumer’s home, an attacker could hijack those systems, including smart door locks.

The expert also believes an attacker could cause a meter to explode by making modifications to the software running on the device.

We are seeing a spate of report from around the United States—and indeed around the world—of fires believed to have been caused by smart meters that were faulty, incorrectly installed, or connected to circuits where there were unfortunate and unforeseen effects. This appears to be not just a matter of freak incidents that may or may not have taken place here or there. In a compilation made by the EMF Safety Network, which specializes in EMF and RF precaution, there are at least a couple of dozen smart meter fire reports from Australia to Canada and virtually all regions of the United States, and some of those reports concern a couple of dozen fire incidents. In some cases fires appear to have originated in the meters themselves, in other cases in appliances like microwave ovens or refrigerators (as in the photo above), because of power surges.

To be sure, those reports are not necessarily going undisputed by local utilities and energy companies. In one instance, for example, California’s PG&E and fire officials have taken issue with an initial report of meter induced fires in Santa Rosa;

a short circuit in the distribution system blew out a number of meters, both conventional and two-way, the local fire chief said.

On the other hand, just last week Commonwealth Edison of Illinois confirmed three smart meter fires in its operating area, and earlier last month its sibling company Peco Energy suspended smart meter installations in the Mid-Atlantic states after 15 reports of smart meter fires, one in Philadelphia.

Firefighters had to run about 1,500 feet of hoses, the length of about three football fields, to get water from the one working hydrant on Mahoning Avenue to the fire.

The chief said it took three to four hours to clean up those hoses and six hours to put out the fire. If the hydrants closer to the building had been working, this could’ve been done much sooner.

“We probably could have got a handle on it a lot quicker if the hydrants would have been working ’cause we had multiple hydrants right by the building,” Chief Natali said.

The owners had been secretly pumping millions of dollars into the plant and other real estate — while fighting federal regulators — in a massive criminal scheme that was carried out across the country, federal prosecutors say.

The factory was the centerpiece of a U.S. steel fortune acquired by oligarch Ihor Kolomoisky, who is accused by prosecutors of stealing hundreds of millions from Ukraine's largest bank between 2008 and 2016 and then plowing the money into steel mills from New York to Texas.

A fire broke out in 2010 in a Dumpster containing dangerous chemicals at Felman. As Paula Cunningham Rickard, a health and safety worker, tried to put out the flames, the chemicals exploded, throwing her across the concrete. She said she now collects disability from her injuries.

In the case of Mr. Henry, who worked on the upper floor of the aging facility, his exposure to smoke and fumes was so intense that he came down with toxic poisoning that forced him to leave his job, court records state.

"There were so many people injured and hurt," said Richard Richmond, 47, a former plant engineer who plunged 30-feet through a hole in a badly damaged upper floor a decade ago and broke nearly two dozen bones in his body. "It's heartbreaking."

Along the way, the operators gained the help of the elected leaders and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on Washington, D.C., lobbying firms to fend off regulators and keep operating in one of the most economically distressed areas of West Virginia.

Mr. Kolomoisky, a Ukraine resident who once sent his own armed militia to take over a government oil company, did not respond to repeated interview requests. His criminal defense lawyer, Michael J. Sullivan, did not return messages, but in earlier interviews with reporters, he denied the allegations.

Mr. Manchin, an influential centrist Democrat who has pushed back on President Joe Biden's more progressive environmental plans, did not respond to questions from a Post-Gazette reporter on Tuesday near the Senate Chambers.

An aide accompanying the senator said he would accept questions emailed to the staff. Despite repeated messages, Mr. Manchin's office did not respond to written questions but provided a statement:

"Senator Manchin has always fought to protect West Virginia jobs and worked in a bicameral, bipartisan way to protect the good-paying jobs at the Mason County facility," said Sam Runyon, communications director.

The fight over the release of the information came as the oligarch was moving the money into the country — sometimes tens of millions a week — with the help of PrivatBank employees who were loyal to Mr. Kolomoisky and fellow oligarch Gennadiy Bogolyubov, both major shareholders in the Ukraine bank.

Once the funds arrived in the United States they were poured into real estate, including most of the steel factories, two office parks in Dallas, a sprawling manufacturing center in Illinois and four office towers in Cleveland, including a 31-story high rise with gleaming skylights and a sweeping view of the city.

In less than a decade, at least $750 million was moved into the country from Ukraine — all through Deutsche Bank, the global lender that has paid millions in fines to U.S. regulators in recent years over breakdowns in anti-money laundering.

The top officer of the West Virginia factory, Mordechai "Motti" Korf, a Florida businessman accused by federal prosecutors of participating in the laundering scheme and serving as one of Mr. Kolomoisky's key allies, did not respond to interview requests.

But his lawyer said his client has done nothing wrong. "Mr. Korf never engaged in money laundering of any kind, and he has no knowledge of anyone else doing so," said Marc Kasowitz, a New York attorney who once served as a personal lawyer to former President Trump. "Any allegations against Mr. Korf are false and irresponsible [and] arise from Ukrainian political disputes he has nothing to do with and ultimately will be dismissed."

The next year, Ms. Capito went to the trade commission to ask that tariffs be continued on Venezuela and other countries accused of dumping steel to help the factory in West Virginia save jobs, just months after Mr. Kolomoisky and his partners secretly moved $20 million in embezzled money into the United States to buy another steel facility in Kentucky, according to court records filed by prosecutors.

To hide the transfers, the money was moved through 13 different bank accounts of offshore companies in a dizzying series of transactions, prosecutors said.

Months after the Kentucky factory was purchased, red flags were raised once again, this time by state officials who demanded to inspect the financial records of the West Virginia metals plant but were unable to get them.

In order for the factory to get a big reduction in electric costs, it needed to show financial audits, which track the dollars that go in and out of the facility.

Again and again, state officials demanded to see the reports, but Felman Production said it didn't have them.

On some days, the smoke and fumes rising from the facility would blow into the nearby neighborhood, covering the homes with a layer of industrial grime, said neighbors and three former employees.

"It ate the paint right off. Imagine what it does to your body," said Paula Cunningham Rickard, 57, the safety employee who was injured when a dumpster filled with chemicals caught fire and exploded in 2010.

Two homeowners who live near the facility said they are unable to remove the brown stains from the sides of their homes, even though the fumes have lessened in recent years. "It eats right into the vinyl siding," said Tom Roush, 70, who lives less than a quarter mile away.

In the first decade of operation starting in 2006, federal regulators turned up two dozen serious violations that they said could cause accidents and lead to injuries or death, the most of any of Mr. Kolomoisky's factories.

When the EPA pitched the plan to impose pollution restrictions on the facility and another in Ohio, then Ohio attorney general Mike DeWine jumped into the fray and wrote a letter to three of the most powerful politicians in the country at the time — Vice President Mike Pence, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan — asking them to help ease the restrictions.

"There is no doubt that protecting the public health from hazardous air pollution is critical, but a proper balance should be struck to prevent job losses, let alone a risk of closure to local businesses," he wrote in 2017.

Mr. Kasowitz, the lawyer for Felman's CEO, said the factory "has made significant investments in worker and environmental safety and will continue to do so." And that the reportable incidents that took place so far this year at the facility are below the industry average.

He said that since the agreement was reached in the lawsuit, Felman has invested more than $2 million in "safety and environmental capital expenditures" and more than $1.6 million in safety and environmental initiatives.

By 2016, Mr. Kolomoisky's money run in the United States began to shift in a new direction when Ukraine regulators turned up evidence that showed the largest bank in the country was in trouble.

Stress tests on the institution by the government showed big money shortages, prompting regulators to take over the bank in late 2016 to avoid a collapse from what they suspected was massive fraud.

After the government looked at the evidence, "we found the fraud was even bigger," former Ukraine finance minister Alex Danyliuk told the Post-Gazette.

A subsequent audit showed $5.5 billion in losses — most of the money in loans doled out to companies owned by the oligarchs and related companies, auditors said.

The ability of Ukraine oligarchs to purchase 13 steel factories — an industry considered crucial to national defense — raises questions about the performance of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, a federal panel empowered to screen such deals, said experts.

But less than 18 months after the state agreed to help by approving up to $35 million in rate cuts over six years, owner Ukraine oligarch Ihor Kolomoisky and his partners shut down and abandoned the facility, leaving 162 workers out of jobs without any medical insurance and owing dozens of suppliers, including Ohio Edison.

"They left the employees and the property high and dry," wrote Ohio assistant attorney general Karrie Kunkel in an environmental action against the facility.

The closing shows how powerful foreign figures with questionable pasts and wealth can exploit vulnerable communities in the heartland that are desperate for jobs and investment.

Finally, two months ago, just days after a settlement was reached between the attorney general's office and the mill, a spectacular fire broke out in the company offices in the early morning hours on Aug. 11.

When firefighters arrived to battle the blaze, they found the electricity had been turned off leading to the site and the fire hydrants shut off, with no water to douse the flames.

Ultimately, firefighters had to run fire hoses 1,500 feet to reach working hydrants on the main roadway, records and interviews show. The Ohio fire marshal's office suspects arson as the cause but has not reported any suspects.

Doug Emerine, trustee chairman of Champion Township where part of the plant is located, said the land needs to be cleaned up. "That's really our only hope at this point," he said. "It's sad to drive by that mill and see it. The disregard for the safety and health. The whole thing is disappointing."

He said that the electric rate cuts made to the facility were because the mill offered "a glimmer of hope" in restoring jobs. "You have an area that's dependent on jobs, and everyone was willing to throw everything at them."

And now, "we're stuck with the mess."

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has spent more than a year examining thousands of records — including internal bank documents and previously sealed court records — and conducted dozens of interviews that culminated in several stories about federal prosecutors’ first-ever laundering investigation of the U.S. steel industry.

Lawyers for the two men dispute the U.S. government’s claims the money was stolen from the Ukraine bank, saying it came from loans that were legitimate and have been upheld by the Ukraine courts in multiple decisions.

Several Ukraine legal experts interviewed by the Post-Gazette say, however, that those court decisions were reached during a campaign by the oligarch to file hundreds of cases in search of favorable courts and to withdraw from other courts to avoid losing.

Mr. Kolomoisky was a lightning rod of controversy in Ukraine at the time, especially after he dispatched his own armed militia into a government oil company in 2015 during a dispute.

Laber is listed as a board member of Jewish Educational Media, a nonprofit which promotes the work of the late Grand Rebbe Menachem Schneerson, the Ukraine-born spiritual leader of the Chabad Lubavitcher movement.

Colel Chabad, a Brooklyn charity for orphans and widows, received $466,647 between 2006 and 2013 from Laber Foundation Inc., while the Korf Family Foundation Inc. gave $476,000 between 2006 and 2013 to the charity.

Authorities have not accused the charities of wrongdoing.

Korf and Laber also face a civil lawsuit in Delaware from PrivatBank, and could have to forfeit millions worth of real estate and companies they purchased if the federal lawsuits from the DOJ succeed. No criminal charges have been filed.

While it is unclear if the two men used their charity connections to launder cash, experts say nonprofits are often used to avoid taxes and hide funds.

“Charities could certainly be part of an incestuous collection of legal entities that make it very difficult to follow the money,” said Laurie Styron, executive director of Charity Watch.

“Mr. Korf and Mr. Laber have never had any dealings with laundered money and any allegations to the contrary are patently false and irresponsible,” said attorney Marc Kasowitz. “They are very proud of their longstanding charitable contributions and the good that those contributions have brought.”

One of the tycoons is one of Ukraine's wealthiest and most influential citizens, a businessman who helped propel a former stand-up comedian and TV actor into Ukraine's presidency in 2019.

That man, Ihor Kolomoyskiy, and his associate, Hennadiy Boholyubov, have denied the accusations, saying the money used to purchase the U.S. assets that Korf and Laber now run came from the sale of their Ukrainian steel business to a Russian competitor for $2 billion.

In a 2002 book about Jewish diaspora communities, Laber was quoted as saying that he was introduced to his "Russian partners" -- an apparent reference to Kolomoyskiy and Boholyubov, as many people in eastern Ukraine speak Russian as their first language -- by Kaminezki, the rabbi who arrived in Dnipro in 1990.

Kolomoyskiy and Bohlyubov, who have Israeli citizenship, are close to Kaminezki and major supporters of Jewish culture in Ukraine and abroad.

"I didn't know who was honest and who wasn't, who we could work with, all the problems you run into in this part of the world. Without [Kaminezki] saying that 'this is an honest person' we wouldn't have known," Laber was quoted as saying. "Anyone can introduce you to another person; the point here is the reliability. He knows what's up, basically."

Kaminezki's characterization of Kolomoyskiy -- as recounted by Laber -- clashes with those who view the tycoon as among the country's worst corporate raiders.

Kolomoyskiy fled Ukraine in 2017 amid concerns over prosecution and a falling out with then-President Petro Poroshenko. He returned to the country a month after Volodymyr Zelenskiy defeated Poroshenko in April 2019 to win the presidency.

Though the constitution of the country doesn’t allow Ukraine citizens to be extradited, Mr. Kolomoisky also holds citizenships in Cyprus and Israel, which may allow the country enough room to find a loophole, said former Prosecutor General Ruslan Ryaboshapka.

Kolomoisky also appears to have ties to the country's incoming president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, whose hit TV show was hosted by the oligarch's network. Reuters reported last week that Zelenskiy chose as head of his presidential administration a lawyer with links to Kolomoisky, who continues to fight with the government over control of Privatbank.

And in 1950, the U.S. military harnessed that power in a large-scale biowarefare test, writes Rebecca Kreston on her blog “Body Horrors” for Scientific American.

Beginning on September 26, 1950, the crew of a U.S. Navy minesweeper ship spent six days spraying Serratia marcescens into the air about two miles off the northern California coast. The project was called “Operation Sea Spray,” and its aim was to determine the susceptibility of a big city like San Francisco to a bioweapon attack by terrorists.

In the following days, the military took samples at 43 sites to track the bacteria's spread, and found that it had quickly infested not only the city but surrounding suburbs as well. During the test, residents of these areas would have inhaled millions of bacterial spores. Clearly, their test showed, San Francisco and cities with similar size and topography could face germ warfare threats. “In this regard, the experiment was a success,” writes Kreston.

But there was a catch. At the time, the US military thought that Serratia couldn’t harm humans. The bug was mostly known for the red spots it produced on infested foods and had not been widely linked to clinical conditions. That changed when one week after the test, 11 local residents checked into a Stanford University Hospital complaining of urinary tract infections.

Upon testing their pee, doctors noticed that the pathogen had a red hue. “Infection with Serratia was so rare that the outbreak was extensively investigated by the University to identify the origins of this scarlet letter bug,” writes Kreston. After scientists identified the microbe, the cases collectively became the first recorded outbreak of Serratia marcescens. One patient, a man named Edward Nevin who was recovering from prostate surgery, died, and some have suggested that the release forever changed the area's microbial ecology, as Bernadette Tansey pointed out for the San Francisco Chronicle in 2004.

The military had performed similar tests in other cities across the country over the next two decades, until Richard Nixon halted all germ warfare research in 1969. The San Francisco experiment didn’t become public knowledge until 1976.

In the course of a quest for therapeutic agents inhibiting uropathogens, the rise and universal blowout of antibiotic-resistant organisms is a wide problem. To overcome this matter, exploration of alternative antimicrobials is necessary. The antimicrobial potential of quercetin has been widely described against some pathogenic microorganisms, but to the best of our knowledge, no report exists against the pathogenicity of uropathogenic Serratia marcescens. Hence, the present study focused on the antibacterial mechanism of action of quercetin, a flavonoid against the uropathogen Serratia marcescens. Quercetin was evaluated for its anti-QS activity, and the attained outcomes showed that quercetin inhibited QS-mediated virulence factors such as biofilm formation, exopolysaccharides, swarming motility and prodigiosin in Serratia marcescens. The proposed mechanism of action of quercetin greatly influences cell metabolism and extracellular polysaccharide synthesis and damages the cell membrane, as revealed through global metabolome profiling. In vivo experiments revealed that treatment with quercetin prolonged the life expectancy of infected Caenorhabditis elegans and reduced the colonization of Serratia marcescens. Hence, the current study reveals the use of quercetin as a probable substitute for traditional antibiotics in the treatment of uropathogen infections driven by biofilms.

5. Conclusions

QS (Quorum Sensing) regulates the bacterial virulence and its inhibition can attenuate the virulence of bacteria leading to enhancement of the ability of the immune system to remove the bacteria. The advantage of bacterial virulence inhibition that it is less likely to induce resistance. Xylitol may be a good weapon, or at least an adjunctive weapon, to treat infections caused by S. marcescens as it showed growth inhibiting activity and virulence attenuating activity, and it may be further considered in management of wound infection by S. marcescens. In the current study, we are introducing the application of xylitol and other sugar hypertonic preparations as adjunctive therapy for further investigation on treatment of resistant infections.

This work confirms the presence of electromagnetic radiation within bacterial communities, which is a key requirement to demonstrate electromagnetic signalling among bacterial cells.

Through its power purchase agreement with Solaren Corporation, PG&E is entitled to generation from a first-of-its kind space-based solar project. The experimental technology uses orbiting satellites equipped with solar cells to convert the sun's energy into electricity, which is then converted into radio frequency energy that can be transmitted to a local receiver station. The reservoir of Space‐Based Solar Power is almost unimaginably vast, with room for growth far past the foreseeable needs of the entire human civilization for the next century and beyond. In the vicinity of Earth, each and every hour there are 1.366 gigawatts of solar energy continuously pouring through every square kilometer of space. If one were to stretch that around the circumference of geostationary orbit, that 1 km‐wide ring receives over 210 terawatt‐years of power annually.

FINDING:

The SBSP Study Group found that when people are first introduced to this subject, the key expressed concerns are centered around safety,

possible weaponization of the beam,

and vulnerability of the satellite, all of which must be addressed with education.

Because the microwave beams are constant and conversion efficiencies high, they can be beamed at densities substantially lower than that of sunlight and still deliver more energy per area of land usage than terrestrial solar energy. The peak density of the beam is likely to be significantly less than noon sunlight, and at the edge of the rectenna equivalent to the leakage allowed and accepted by hundreds of millions in their microwave ovens. This low energy density and choice of wavelength also means that biological effects are likely extremely small, comparable to the heating one might feel if sitting some distance from a campfire.

Recommendation:

The SBSP Study Group recommends that the federal government should take reasonable and appropriate steps

to ensure that SBSP systems cannot be utilized as space‐based weapons systems,

and to dissuade and deter other nations from attacking these strategic power sources, including but not limited to:

ƒ Tasking a civilian federal agency to be the lead agency responsible for federal investments in SBSP and in the demonstration of key technologies needed by industry.

Solaren states that the impetus for forming was the convergence of improved high efficiency energy conversion devices, heavy launch vehicle developments, and what it describes as a revolutionary Solaren-patented SSP plant design that is a significant departure from past efforts and makes SSP not only technically, but economically viable. While a system of this scale and exact configuration has not been built, the underlying technology is said to be very mature and is based on communications satellite technology. This electricity powers high efficiency generator devices, known as solid state power amplifiers (SSPA). The SSPA devices on-board the satellite convert electricity into RF energy. Next the SSP satellite, using the RF energy and the satellite’s antenna, directs and transmits the RF power to the California ground receive station. The ground receiver directly converts the RF energy to electricity, and uses the local power grid for transmission to the PG&E delivery point.

Solaren states that it is currently supporting the CPUC regulatory filing process, and plans to provide additional details about the SSP pilot plant project in early Summer 2009.

One of the primary objections to space solar power is the idea of an antenna shooting a concentrated beam of energy through our atmosphere. But we already use radiofrequency and microwaves to send smaller amounts of energy all the time. "People might not associate radio waves with carrying energy," says Jaffe, "because they think of them for communications, like radio, TV, or cell phones. LOCK STEP – A world of tighter top-down government control and more authoritarian leadership, with limited innovation and growing citizen pushback

During the pandemic,

national leaders around the world flexed their authority and imposed airtight rules and restrictions, from the mandatory wearing of face masks to body-temperature checks at the entries to communal spaces like train stations and supermarkets.

Even after the pandemic faded,

this more authoritarian control and oversight of citizens and their activities stuck and even intensified.

In order to protect themselves from the spread of increasingly global problems—from pandemics and transnational terrorism to environmental crises and rising poverty—leaders around the world

took a firmer grip on power…

Citizens willingly gave up some of their sovereignty—and their privacy—to more paternalistic states in exchange for greater safety and stability.

Citizens were more tolerant, and even eager, for top-down direction and oversight, and national leaders had more latitude to impose order in the ways they saw fit.

In developed countries, this heightened oversight took many forms:

biometric IDs for all citizens,

for example, and tighter regulation of key industries whose stability was deemed vital to national interests.

In many developed countries, enforced cooperation with a suite of new regulations and agreements slowly but steadily restored both order and, importantly, economic growth.

SUMMARY OF INVENTION

In this invention, we describe an improved nucleic acid origami platform providing functional, stable, safe, non-immunogenic, and remote controllable therapeutic nano-devices. The platform also provide the means to provide a cargo in a ligand concentration dependent manner, control the activity of the devices by closing them at predetermined conditions, separately control multiple types of cargo, extend the shelf life of molecules such as drugs, vaccines, proteins, growth factors, cytokines, RNA molecules etc., and a tunable system to prevent drug tachyphylaxis by suppressing the endocytosis of drug-bound receptors from the cell surface.

The platform is based on methods for modifying DNA origami devices by the addition of small molecule chemicals, peptides or large proteins, additional nucleic acid molecules, inorganic quantum dots, nanocrystals or nanoparticles, liposomes, polysaccharides, polymers, carbon nanotubes, and additional materials.

The methods can also include enzymatic or non-enzymatic modification of the composition and structure of the DNA from which the device is made, such as methylation, acetylation, hydroxylation, fixation by chemical means, coating, etc. Finally, the platform can be achieved by designing the DNA origami device to be made of DNA that does not include certain motifs such as CpG, AT-rich regions etc.

Overcoming a Problem in Drug Design

By agreeing to support this technology, Pfizer has expressed confidence in Prof. Bachelet’s approach that shows great promise in helping overcome a major problem in drug design — the fact that doctors have almost no control where or when a drug will be active once it is administered.

Prof. Bachelet’s system opens up new possibilities for bio-embedded computers that can work as a coordinated team, responding to cellular signals, making a drug available or unavailable at will, and controlling drug interactions.

Potential to Target Cancer Cells

In explaining how to make a nanometric robot, Bachelet says, “We first of all create a selected DNA sequence, and then fold it by using a process called DNA origami. With this method, a person can give a command to a computer, which folds the DNA molecule as needed.”

According to Bachelet, this method has the potential to target cancer cells. These types of cells can be targeted as a result of using the DNA sequence to make a form of a clam that contains an anti-cancer drug. He adds, “…the clam can be designed to change its shape and release the drug only when it meets a cancer cell or the right tissue.”

A Returning Scientist, Prof. Bachelet came to BIU from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) several years ago. He is among the 50 Returning Scientists who were brought back to Israel by BIU, thanks in part to funding provided by supporters of the American Friends of Bar-Ilan University.

Augmanity, a research company based in Rehovot, Israel, has synthesized molecular machines, made from nucleic acids, which are capable of digesting viral RNA and utilizing it to assemble additional copies of itself inside living cells.(www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.08.12.248997v1)

The machine’s body plan combines several parts that build upon the target RNA, assembling an immobile, DNA:RNA 4-way junction, which contains a single gene encoding a hammerhead ribozyme (HHR). Full assembly of the machine’s body from its parts enables the subsequent elongation of the gene and transcription of HHR molecules, followed by HHR-mediated digestion of the target molecule. This digestion converts the target to a building block suitable for participation in the assembly of more copies of the machine, mimicking biological heterotrophy.

The work was led by Ido Bachelet.

In 2014, Ido had developed nanobots that could open and close based on molecular sensing. This was going to be the basis for nano-surgery. They had made billions of the devices and would inject them into patients.

The company that made the nanobots was bought by Pfizer.

There has been no reports on the progress toward nanosurgery from Pfizer.

Now, Ido Bachelet appears to have left Pfizer and is working on more advanced nanorobots based upon DNA and RNA.

Augmanity researchers describe the general design of a prototypical machine, characterize its activity cycle and kinetics, and show that it can be efficiently and safely delivered into live cells. As a proof of principle, we constructed a machine that targets the Autographa californica multicapsid nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcMNPV) GP64 gene, and show that it effectively suppresses viral propagation in a cell population, exhibiting predator/prey-like dynamics with the infecting virus. In addition, the machine significantly reduced viral infection, stress signaling, and innate immune activation inside virus-infected animals. This preliminary design could control the behavior of antisense therapies for a range of applications, particularly against dynamic targets such as viruses and cancer.

The discovery and synthesis of the immobile DNA junction by Seeman, nearly 4 decades ago, emerged as a cornerstone of DNA nanotechnology, an expanding field with unique technological potential. The immobile junction enabled, for the first time, programming and control of the spatial positioning of matter at a single DNA base resolution, or approximately 3.5 angstroms. The design reported here is modular, and can be adapted rapidly to counter new targets, for example viruses once their genome has been sequenced.

In addition, it could lead to new types of biologically-inspired, programmable agents for a range of therapeutic applications. Interestingly, this machine highlights complex anatomy and a hypothetical, rudimentary mechanism for predation, plausible features of molecular life forms from the RNA world.

One Trillion 50 nanometer nanobots in a syringe will be injected into people to perform cellular surgery.

The tiny molecular computers of the DNA nanobots can provide molecular selective control for powerful medicines that were already developed.

Using DNA origami and molecular programming, they are reality. These nanobots can seek and kill cancer cells, mimic social insect behaviors, carry out logical operators like a computer in a living animal, and they can be controlled from an Xbox. Ido Bachelet from the bio-design lab at Bar Ilan University explains this technology and how it will change medicine in the near future.

DNA is a natural substrate for computing and has been used to implement a diverse set of mathematical problems, logic circuits and robotics. The molecule also interfaces naturally with living systems, and different forms of DNA-based biocomputing have already been demonstrated. Here, we show that DNA origami can be used to fabricate nanoscale robots that are capable of dynamically interacting with each other in a living animal. The interactions generate logical outputs, which are relayed to switch molecular payloads on or off. As a proof of principle, we use the system to create architectures that emulate various logic gates (AND, OR, XOR, NAND, NOT, CNOT and a half adder). Following an ex vivo prototyping phase, we successfully used the DNA origami robots in living cockroaches (Blaberus discoidalis) to control a molecule that targets their cells.

DNA and RNA nanostructures have been stably generated and studied in live cells64,65, and recent works have reported the successful delivery of DNA nanostructures into cells66,67 as well as packing DNA nanostructures in liposomes68,69, which improves their in-vivo stability.

In this regard, the current COVID-19 crisis highlights the important of these, traditionally overlooked, advantages of nucleic acid therapeutics.

Animal studies. Adult B. discoidalis of both sexes were purchased from two independent farms, Yaldei Ha-teva or Beit Haiut (Israel), and housed at room temperature and humidity in large plastic containers. Nanoscale robots exhibiting quorum sensing

The autoinducer release mechanism can be potentially adapted to any environment. For example, one could exploit the inherent instability of RNA for the gradual release of signal from the robots.

Alternatively, a UV-cleavable tether would release the signal only upon exposure of the robots to sunlight or another direct source of UV radiation.

In this work we implement, for the first time, collective behavior in molecular robots using a bio-inspired mechanism. The design presented here bears many similarities to bacterial QS, while carrying additional features such as the ability to be activated in response to chosen stimuli. Our work also provides a platform for the engineering of more elaborate communication schemes utilizing several sub-populations differing in autoinducer type and response thresholds, with desirable features as control systems for therapeutics and manufacturing.

When studied from the angle of its worst-case scenario, surviving a highly infectious pandemic depends on a competition between the infectious pathogen and the therapeutic technology, each racing to reach the majority of the population first. This competition confronts us with several challenges: (i) the inevitable response time 𝑡R required for us to instigate a mitigation plan places the pathogen at a potentially significant spreading advantage; (ii) while the pathogen reproduces as it spreads1–3, a therapy must be manufactured and shipped from one or few sources, whose production and distribution capacity may be limited4–12; (iii) the dissemination of antibiotics or vaccines can be hindered by various external factors, such as geopolitical and socio-economical constraints13–16, which have little effect on the propagation of bacteria and viruses. But even if such factors are eliminated, e.g., assuming that an effective cure already exists, stockpiled in sufficient quantities and benefits from worldwide cooperation in its distribution, it would still have to outrun the pathogen, competing along the same routes of dissemination as the epidemic, i.e. the international transportation networks 17–23.

For a rapidly progressing epidemic, such competition may fail, having detrimental consequences in terms of human life.

It seems, therefore, that the only viable strategy is to severely intervene in international mobility, quarantining airports, restricting travel and effectively eliminating the routes supporting the viral spread 24–26, reserving them strictly for the distribution of the therapeutic agent.

Such major interventions, however, may result in a significant economic burden and major political stress, indeed – a lesser of two evils – but still a potentially hurtful toll on global stability.

Hence, we offer to break this gridlock by focusing on therapies that can spread via alternative, intrinsically more efficient, routes compared to those of physical transport. Such alternative is achievable if the therapeutic agent can be converted into digital information, handled and distributed as data, then locally printed, i.e. synthesized, at its designated destination (Box I). Indeed, the Internet provides infrastructure to distribute data extremely efficiently, outperforming any distribution network that mobilizes physical commodities. Hence, using this strategy, a digitizable therapeutic agent will compete within time-scales that are orders of magnitude shorter than those characterizing even the most virulent epidemics, benefiting from the effectively immediate transmission of data vs. the restricted physical medium on which pathogens propagate27.

If we indeed develop the technology to mass-print short DNA strands, it is likely that highly populated nodes, will also have an increased capacity to synthesize the drugs, e.g., by scaling the number of printers with population size. Therefore, while typically 𝐶𝑆 P ≪ 1, confronting a single node vs. the global demand, 𝑐𝑛 D is likely of order unity for most 𝑛. Moreover, in real scenarios, nodes with 𝑐𝑛 D > 1 can aid less capable nodes by small scale per demand physical distribution – a practical strategy to further improve dissemination efficiency, that was not included in our current theoretical framework. Finally, in case of a novel pathogen, the discovery of a therapeutic aptamer is often significantly faster43 than that of molecular drugs (Box I), potentially reducing our response time 𝑡R, which as our analysis indicates, plays a crucial role in the mitigation efficiency.
