US firm combines nanotechnology, blockchain for COVID-19 immunity passports

U.S.-based quantum dot producer Quantum Materials Corp (QMC) announced its blockchain-based QDX HealthID for transparency in disease testing and immunization for infectious diseases. The goal is to ensure the authenticity of health data and support individuals to re-join the workforce quickly.
Quantum dots are nanoparticles made up of semiconductor materials that emit different colors when illuminated by light. This color depends on their size and the way they were manufactured. QMC has developed a track and trace solution using quantum dots and blockchain to verify the origin of products and counterfeiting.
The authentication solution is combined with QDX HealthID for monitoring and tracking the outbreaks of diseases, such as the COVID-19. The solution authenticates individuals being tested, the persons administering the test, and the test kits.
In simpler terms, QDX HealthID ensures that testing data is secure and not tampered with. Currently, health reports and medical certificates are being issued on paper, which makes them easy to forge.
“Not only does this service facilitate improved health outcomes for patients, but it also underpins back-to-work certifications, sometimes referred to as immunization passports,” said Stephen B. Squires, President & CEO of QMC.
With the health data backed by blockchain, governments and health agencies can formulate new plans and safety measures to contain the spread of COVID-19 and other diseases. Additionally, individual users can assess their immunization passport using a mobile application. The app features color-coded indicators — green, yellow, and red. If the app shows the green indicator, the individual has clearance to interact in social and work environments. This indicator can be shared and authenticated by others using a QR code.
“The world must have a system that eliminates the fears and anxiety of not knowing who is able to return to work,” said Les Paull, CEO of QMVT, the unit responsible for sales and marketing of QMC’s innovations.
The solution is hosted on the Microsoft Azure cloud and can integrate with existing EMR systems. It is based on the Hyperledger Sawtooth enterprise blockchain and for smart contracts, it’s using the Digital Asset Modeling Language (DAML).

In today’s announcement, Everledger CEO Leanne Kemp revealed that a partnership with a Chinese e-commerce company would be announced later this year.
UK-based Everledger has developed a provenance platform for diamonds, gemstones, fine wine, and luxury goods, among other things. The solution creates an immutable record of the product’s origin, characteristics, and ownership.
Everledger platform upgrade
At the same time the company unveiled an upgrade to the Everledger platform to support the recovery of the diamond industry amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The platform will now enable buyers to search based on credentials, sustainability footprint, and compliance standards. The new addition was positioned as a ‘demand generation’ feature and includes a match making tool.
“The upgrades improve usability for everyone on the platform, with a state-of-the-art user interface that enables a single view and quick access to information with intuitive commands,” said Tom Murphy, Head of Product at Everledger. “The platform will be more visual, with enhanced graphics such as
badges and analytics.”
The new update is focused on the diamond industry, and it will be scaled to include fine wines, gemstones, e-waste, apparel, and luxury goods.
A few months ago, Everledger launched a carbon offsetting platform for the diamond industry backed by emissions data on the blockchain. Last year, it was awarded funding by the U.S. Department of Energy to pilot blockchain for electric vehicle battery recycling and its working with fellow blockchain startup Circulor on standards for ethical sourcing.

Today the Linux Foundation announced the launch of the Trust over IP (ToIP) Foundation with the aim of creating digital standards to enable parties to share data with trust. It’s about ensuring interoperability between different solutions for trusted data and digital identity.
The 17 founding steering committee members include Accenture, Evernym, IBM and Mastercard with contributing members such as DIDx and R3.
Motivations for forming the initiative were cited as the business challenge of managing digital assets and data as well as low consumer confidence with personal data. The combination, the group believes, is hampering the adoption of digital identity.
“The ToIP Foundation has the promise to provide the digital trust layer that was missing in the original design of the Internet and to trigger a new era of human possibility,” said Jim Zemlin, executive director at the Linux Foundation. “The combination of open standards and protocols, pan-industry collaboration and our neutral governance structure will support this new category of digital identity and verifiable data exchange.”
“In today’s digital economy, businesses and consumers need a way to be certain that data being exchanged has been sent by the rightful owner and that it will be accepted as truth by the intended recipient,” said Dan Gisolfi, CTO, Decentralized Identity, IBM Security. “Many privacy focused innovations are now being developed to solve this challenge, but there is no ‘recipe book’ for the exchange of trusted data across multiple vendor solutions.”
The ToIP Foundation says it plans to use models that leverage interoperable digital wallets and credentials that use the W3C Verifiable Credentials standard.
Hyperledger and the Linux Foundation
There’s quite a big overlap between the membership of this group and Hyperledger, which is part of the Linux Foundation. For example, its Hyperledger Indy project, which underpins the Sovrin identity network was contributed by Evernym. Drummond Reed Evernym’s Chief Trust Officer commented: “We are thrilled to help stand up the ToIP Foundation at the Linux Foundation and hope that it attracts every company and contributor who wants to build a strong and lasting trust layer for the Internet.”
The rationale for ToIP being separate to Hyperledger is two-fold.
Firstly, Hyperledger is primarily about business blockchain, whereas digital identity and privacy protocols is a broad topic and can be decentralized without using blockchain, although blockchain is often used for public key infrastructure.
And secondly, in a previous discussion with Hyperledger Director Brian Behlendorf in a different context he explained that “it’s really, really good to have a standards body in a domain separate from the leading open source project in a domain or from the open source projects in a domain.”
Hyperledger is not a standards body, it’s about open source projects.
However, in today’s announcement, ToIP appears to intend to be both a standards setter and home to open source projects. It has two standards working groups, the Technical Stack Working Group and the Governance Stack Working Group. And also two development groups, the Utility Foundry Working Group and the Ecosystem Foundry Working Group for “projects that wish to collaborate on the development of ToIP utility networks or entire ToIP digital trust ecosystems.”
